A collection of small fishing boats is beached in the foreground of this photograph, perhaps a view around a bend in the Elizabeth River. A grand, four-masted ship anchored in the distance recalls Norfolk’s long history as a center of transatlantic trade. In the dim light the masts of these vessels cut sharp, black lines into the sky, contrasting with the soft patterns of the water’s surface and the similar rippling texture in the clouds.
