Label TextKenneth Harris (1904-1983) Intersection of College Place, Granby, and Market Streets, 1953 Watercolor Collection Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk Newspapers' Art Trust Fund 53.11.14 This mansard-roofed building was built in the popular, French Second Empire style. It originally housed the Norfolk College for Young Ladies, established in 1880. The building was converted into the Algonquin Hotel in 1905 and then later became the Hotel Lee. By 1953, a modern storefront covered the lower portion of the building's original façade. In 1983, the old Norfolk College burned and was subsequently demolished. The park adjacent to Tidewater Community College's Mason C. Andrews Science Building occupies the site today.
