Seated Nude, 1931
Pastel on paper
An early adherent of Cubism, André Lhote embraced the new style in 1911 and devoted much of his later career to Cubist landscapes, still lifes, and figurative works like this Seated Nude. Also an influential critic, theorist, and teacher, he founded his own painting school, the Académie Montparnasse, in Paris in 1922. Lhote’s work and teaching shaped an entire generation of artists, including the American Blanche Lazzell, whose own Nude can be seen to the left.
