Descriptiongelatin silver print photographLabel TextMorley Baer American (1916-1995) Creek Willows, Garrapata Canyon, Sur Coast, 1964 Gelatin-silver print Purchase, gift of Alan J. Hofheimer and the National Endowment for the Arts 89.73 Morley Baer began photographing in the late 1930s in Chicago, and since that time has made his living as an architectural photographer. During World War II, Baer joined the Navy and executed the usual military assignments until he talked his way into Edward Steichen's famed war documentary unit. After the war, he went to California where he became acquainted with Edward Weston, and for more than ten years was an instructor at the Ansel Adams Yosemite workshops. In contrast to the broad vistas and monumental landscapes seen in the photography of Ansel Adams, Baer's work is more intimate and deals with less grandiose scenes. Thus, one could say that Baer's photographs can be appreciated on a more human scale. The Chrysler collection includes 12 Baer photographs; all of which either were the gift of Alan J. Hofheimer or purchased with his assistance. Edited By: GLY Edited Date: 11/07/2003Exhibition History"Silver Images: The Photography Collection at 25," Alice R. and Sol B.
