DescriptionBlack-figure style Corinthian oinoche. Ground was originally covered by a red slip to imitate Attic red clay, but has worn off. Two sphinxes facing inwards, flanking a bird flying left. Likely attributable to the Leontinoi Painter (attributed thus by Amyx; prior to 1961, known as The Painter of the Slender Sphinxes, attributed by Benson). Bird is identified as a flying eagle, which is a rare composition in the Leontinoi Painter’s production.ProvenancePurchased by Mr. Sheldon Lewis Breitbart from Dr. Jacob Hirsch’s Estate (Geneva); Breitbart records that “this vase was at one time in the William Randolf Hirst collection” (note spelling is Hirst and not Hearst). At one point in the collection of the Conde de Lagunillas (Havana). Gifted to the Chrysler Museum of Art in 1971 by Mr. Sheldon Lewis Breitbart.
