DescriptionThis is a photogravure; originally part of CAMERA WORK.

Label TextEdward Jean Steichen American, 1879–1973 Nude with Cat, ca. 1903 Halftone print published in Camera Work No. 2 (April 1903) The trendsetting quarterly Camera Work reviewed all types of artmaking, but its primary goal was to promote photography as fine art. Each issue featured essays, many written by its editor, Alfred Stieglitz, and other photographers, as well as printed examples of their work, each carefully tipped into the journal by hand. Here Edward Steichen has juxtaposed the crouching bodies of a nude woman and a cat to compare their graceful, feminine curves. Deliberate soft focus, a trademark style of many Camera Work photographers, gives this image a poetic haziness, perhaps reminiscent of an Impressionist painting. Museum purchase 89.103.10
