FSA Regional Director George S. Mitchell wanted to change the names: “I think they ought to have names that will serve to stimulate pride in the achievements of [black] leaders.” Today, the streets are named after respected black Virginians, and the Hampton community remains occupied by many original homesteaders and their descendants.
