Label TextFunerary Portrait Statue Roman, 50-1 B.C.E. Clastic limestone Gift of Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. 78.429 Ancient Greek and Roman art were a key part of the history of Western art that Chrysler sought to represent in his encyclopedic museum collection. Again, his preference for large-scale figurative art drew him to assemble full-length statues of typically Roman subjects like this funerary figure of a woman. Her idealized pose and drapery belie her function as she marked a tomb and commemorated the life of its occupant with a mournful and reflective gesture.
