Label TextCharles Marville [Charles-François Bossu] French, 1813–1879 Place de l’École, from the Quai de l’École, Paris, 1st arrondissement, ca. 1865–68 Albumen print from collodion negative Charles Marville worked with municipal agencies to document urban renewal projects, assembling the most complete photographic record of Paris until Eugène Atget’s work at the turn of the century.The new collodion on glass negatives and albumen silver paper, which resulted in superior sharpness and definition, enabled Marville to produce detailed images. While other photographers such as the Bissons often isolated their architectural subjects, Marville maximized spatial depth to represent the full urban context, and his low vantage point provided a heightened sense of the ambience of the street.
