Label TextKenneth Harris (1904-1983) Sunday Morning, ca. 1950 Watercolor Gift of Gabrielle Parker Hubbard 97.16.1 This mid-20th century watercolor captures a fleeting moment from Norfolk's past that seems as though it should belong to a still earlier era -a lone horse-drawn wagon passing a local produce store on a quiet morning. Of the buildings shown only Queen Street Baptist Church-a historically African American Church survives (seen in the background). The Federal era house and the Victorian store with a jigsaw-work wooden balcony were swept away by urban renewal. They stood on what was then the southeast corner of Queen and Cumberland streets. Queen was reshaped and given the name of a connecting street, Brambleton Avenue. Cumberland was almost entirely obliterated; the portion seen at this intersection became part of St. Paul's Boulevard. The only part of Cumberland that follows its original course is the section that intersects Freemason Street at the Norfolk History Museum.
