DescriptionMarble sculpture of a young naked Isaac kneeling on logs.Label TextRandolph Rogers American, 1825–1892 Isaac, 1853–54 Marble In the book of Genesis, God tests the obedience of his follower Abraham by ordering him to sacrifice his son and heir, Isaac. Here, Isaac kneels on an altar of sticks and looks up toward heaven. Though threatened with death, the handsome youth displays strength and courage. Like this statue, Thomas Cole’s Voyage of Life encourages us to have physical and spiritual fortitude and valor as we navigate hardship and pursue our dreams and callings. In this story, God ultimately withdraws his command, sparing Isaac’s life. Gift of James H.
