DescriptionThis is an albumen carte de visite depicting Stephen Arnold Douglas, 1813-1861; political leader, orator, U.S. Senator; Lincoln's political opponent; called "The Little Giant".Label TextStephen Arnold Douglas, ca. 1860 American Albumen print (photograph) Lincoln held great respect for his fellow Illinois politician and frequent rival Stephen A. Douglas (1813−1861). Douglas defeated Lincoln in their race for the Senate in 1858, but when they competed for the presidency in 1860, the moderate Northern Democrat lost to his fervently abolitionist Republican opponent. During that campaign, Douglas traveled across the country delivering fiery speeches to win support. This carte-de-visite, based on a print, was likely made around the time of that national campaign.
