DescriptionThis painting depicts men carrying an eight person scull on their shoulders.Label TextJoseph Christian Leyendecker American, 1874–1951 Sculling Crew, 1932 Oil on canvas, 32 x 24 in. (81.3 x 61 cm) A team of rowers effortlessly carry their small boat in this painting by J. C. Leyendecker. Created for the cover of the August 6, 1932 issue of The Saturday Evening Post, this is one of 322 Post covers designed by the artist between 1899 and 1943. Like the work of his successor Norman Rockwell, Leyendecker’s illustrations celebrated traditional American values using humorous everyday situations, or, as seen here, a cast of confident and elegant models. The Latin inscription above these athletes translates to “A healthy mind in a healthy body.” The Frank K.
