Label TextWilliam Trost Richards’ easel, stool, paint box, palette, paints, and other materials, ca. 1890s
In 1994 Edith Ballinger Price donated to the Chrysler Museum of Art dozens of drawings, watercolors, and paintings created by her grandfather, the landscape painter William Trost Richards (1833–1905). Her gift also included some of his equipment and artist’s materials. This collapsible and portable easel, stool, and paint box allowed Richards to take long walks along empty stretches of coastline and to create a temporary outdoor workspace before any vista that pleased him, no matter how remote.
Gifts of Edith Ballinger Price 94.24.66, .67, .68, and .107–.124
