Label TextRené Magritte Belgian (1898-1967) Tableau (self portrait with Jacqueline Nonkels), ca. 1927 Gelatin silver print Horace W. Goldsmith and Art Purchase Funds 93.19.1 A well known Surrealist painter, René Magritte began experimenting with photography and photomontage around 1929. His photographs, which can be viewed more as snapshots, document the private lives of his friends and family. Despite their informality, however, it is evident that Magritte acted as director, manipulating his subjects, including himself, to create controlled compositions that often reflect the imagery in his paintings.
