DescriptionThis is an ink drawing on paper. It illustrates a seascape; a sailing vessel is seen in the distance, and driftwood is in the foreground.Label TextSeascape, ca. 1889 Ink on wove paper Describing his love for the ocean, William Trost Richards once wrote to a friend: The early part of last week we had another tremendous surf, of which I got some record. But it is a little too much for me, perhaps for anybody, for I do not remember any picture which gives any idea of the awful power of the breaking of a big wave against the rocks, much less of the tumult of the back action as it meets the incoming wave.
