Up and Down Fifth, New York City 1999
Gelatin-silver print
Gift of the Artist, Harvey R. Zipkin 2002.24
Zipkin works in a traditional street photography mode focusing on the New York cityscape. This photograph offers recognizable New York City landmarks such as the Empire State Building and the Flatiron Building while at the same time mystifying the viewer with the photographer's vantage point. It is a fresh and original vision of that frequently photographed city. The reflection is created by a piece of sculpture that had been temporarily installed at that location (Broadway and Fifth Avenue at 23rd Street). In 1998, Zipkin had a solo exhibition at the New York Transit Museum entitled Personally, I Don't Like Cabs, (the title was a quote by Edgar Degas).
