DescriptionThe subject of this portrait, Samuel Myers, is depicted in a half-length view; his body square in the frame, facing the viewer, his gaze turned upward and slightly away. The subject is dressed in a rich red toga, gathered at his right shoulder with a gilt clasp or ornament, covering a white tunic with short sleeves. He holds his left arm at a right angle to his body, just above his waist. His palm is open, the thumb and index finger outstretched, and the other fingers curling upward. This portrait suggests a serious man of learning. The background is variegated brown, with an amber glow to the viewer's left.
