Label TextEikoh Hosoe Japanese (b. 1933) Ordeal by Roses #3, 1961 Gelatin-silver print Purchase, in memory of Alice R. and Sol B. Frank 2003.15 The second son of a Buddhist priest, Eikoh Hosoe was born in Yonesawa, Japan, and brought to Tokyo shortly thereafter. He first came to prominence with his 1961 book Man and Woman, but it was his body of work known as Ordeal by Roses, or Barakei, that solidified his position as the best-known contemporary Japanese photographer. Portraying the acclaimed Japanese author Yukio Mishima as the central figure in a complexly orchestrated photographic drama, this work was first published in 1963 as Killed by Roses. In 1971, a new edition of the book changed the name to Ordeal by Roses.
