DescriptionThis cordial glass (there are a pair of goblets and a wine glass in this group of matching stemware) is of colorless lead-formula glass cut and engraved with floral design in the manner of rock crystal.Label TextGoblet, Wine Glass and Cordial H. P. Sinclaire & Co., and possibly J. Hoare & Co., both of Corning, New York, ca. 1904-1915 Blown glass, engraved in the style rock crystal Mark on goblet only: SINCLAIRE Gifts of Thurman R. Pierce, Jr., of New York City 93.39.1-3 The marked goblet and unmarked wine and cordial glasses come from a display service that was shown at the jewelry store of J. E. Caldwell in Philadelphia. Since other glasses from the same display service bore the mark of J. Hoare & Co., both makers evidently worked to fill out this elaborately engraved service. The unmarked glasses could have been engraved by either firm. Rock crystal-style glass engraving was popularized in England in the late 19th century by such makers as Stevens & Williams and soon spread to America. At least three American makers worked in this demanding and costly style: H. P. Sinclaire & Co., J. Hoare & Co. and T. G. Hawkes & Co.
