Winston Link began taking photographs of steam engines in 1955, he was making pictures of the past. The Norfolk & Western Line had just announced its plans to convert to diesel power and decommission its outdated coal-burning “Iron Horses.” Link’s nostalgic images of trains rushing along the rails are now highly admired (an example can be seen near the entrance of this gallery). Less well known are the photographs made in the train stations and depots, which offer a different take on time. Although the scenes suggest a simpler age, they highlight modern efficiency. In nearly every exposure, Link captures a clock, suggesting the workers’ commitment to getting the trains in on time.
