Label TextO. Winston Link American, 1914–2001 Class A in a Hurry, Blue Ridge Grade Near Bonsack, Virginia, 1959 Gelatin silver print (photograph) Winston Link made an extensive series on steam engines during their last hurrah, when the railroad industry was turning from coal to diesel power. He developed an impressive array of flash equipment to capture the hulking steam engines weaving their way through small towns and country settings at night. For this image, however, he wanted to convey the sense of motion and energy of a locomotive rushing by at full speed. Using a shutter speed that slowed, but did not freeze the locomotive, and by nearly filling the frame, he expresses all its intense power.
