Ogden Goelet and James Gordon Bennett Cup, 1894
Silver
Yachting was serious business among late 19th-century tycoons. Created by Tiffany and Company, this trophy’s sinuous lines skillfully depict crashing waves and gusting winds below Tritons that erupt from the surface, triumphantly blasting their horns. Commissioned by two of America’s most accomplished yachtsmen at the time—Ogden Goelet (whose wealth came from Manhattan real estate) and James Gordon Bennett, Jr. (owner of the New York Herald)—the trophy went to the Scottish brewer Andrew Barclay Walker when he defeated the Prince of Wales in a race in 1895.
