Label TextCorner Cabinet, ca. 1790–1805 American, Norfolk, Virginia Wood This fine specimen of Norfolk craftsmanship features ornate marquetry designs on its doors and pediment. Such sophistication demonstrates that by the late 1800s Norfolk had developed into a thriving center for furniture production. Numerous cabinetmakers settled in the city to meet the needs of its wealthy citizens. The quality of Norfolk furniture was widely known, and cabinetmakers in other cities could boast about any experience they had working in Norfolk shops. Lent by Clara M. Smiley and Sophie M. Belouet Exhibition History"The Norfolk Rooms," Willoughby-Baylor House, Norfolk, VA, opened August 16, 2014.
