Label TextElisabeth Sunday American (b. 1958) Mythmaker, The !Kung San, Botswana, 1990 Gold toned gelatin silver print, ca. 2004 Gift of Christina and George M. Kemp and Robin M. N. and Steven R. Jones 2005.15.4 From the journal of Elisabeth Sunday: "Most of the young !Kung San people wanted to identify with the west and abandon the traditions of their culture. Though they lived in the Kalahari Desert, 1000 miles from any major town, they drank home-brew and discoed to blasting music under the stars on the remains of colonialist houses. Their disrespect for the old ways saddened the elders. Young people have always tried to figure out their own lives and create their own vision of the future. Even if those visions failed at first and proved self-destructive. I made this photograph as a way to honor the emerging visions of the future from young people all over the world."
