Label TextJeannette Klute American (b. 1918) Pink Spiked Flower, 1950s Dye transfer print Gift of James and Holly Bogin 2005.27.31 Along with Eliot Porter, Jeannette Klute was one of the earliest photographers to work in color. Because of the instability of color photographic materials, this is an area that has, until recently, had few successful practitioners. Klute used the dye transfer process to make her prints. Although it is among the most stable of all photographic processes, it is also the most difficult and expensive. Klute was able to take advantage of this technology because she was employed by the Eastman Kodak Company as Research Photographer in charge of the Visual Research Studio of the Color Control Division. In the 1950s she had solo exhibitions at the George Eastman House, the Los Angeles Art Center School, the Museum of Natural History in New York and the California Academy of Sciences. Her work was also included in the first all-color photography show at the Museum of Modern Art (New York).
