DescriptionThis is a gelatin silver print and panoramic view of a canyon in Utah.Label TextMichael A. Smith American (b. 1942) Canyonlands, Utah, 1978 Gelatin-silver print Gift of George Stephanopoulos 2005.37.9 Photographing exclusively with a large format camera, Smith makes only contact prints with no enlarging in the darkroom. In other words, the size of the print you see here is the same size as the original negative. He has twice received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, and has been the recipient of major commissions to photograph four American cities. Smith works in the tradition of the Group f/64, created in 1932. The group included Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham, and other California based photographers. The term f/64 refers to the camera's smallest aperture, or size of the hole through which light flows. This creates the maximum depth of field, or area in focus. This also results in a longer exposure time in order for the image to register on the film.
