Richards 2006.6 World War I began in Sarajevo with the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914. After years of repression under the Soviet Union the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 symbolized a hopeful future for Europe. Thus the bloody disintegration of Yugoslavia as seen in the siege of Sarajevo from 1992 to 1996 was a shocking tragedy. Richards's photographs of the Sarajevo library have become symbolic of European wars and the destruction of culture in the 20th century. As a member of the Gamma Liaison photo agency, Richards documented the siege of Sarajevo from beginning to end. He returned with a wealth of powerful imagery, much of which was published in an online monographic e-book entitled Remember Sarajevo. He is the editor and publisher of The Digital Filmmaker, and a photo editor/photojournalist at The Virginian-Pilot newspaper. His photojournalism career has included the civil wars in El Salvador and Nicaragua, the US invasion of Panama, political upheaval in Haiti, and civil war in Croatia. He has also worked as the Associated Press photo bureau chief in Bogota, Colombia, and as a staff photographer at the Washington Times in Washington, DC.
