Label Textres Argentine, b. 1957 Constanza Piaggio Argentinean, b. 1982 Maria Alche y Ramon Teves, Ushuaia, from the Conatus series, 2006 Chromogenic print (photograph) These contemporary photographs echo a portrait type invented by 15th-century Italian painters, as seen below. The photographers res and Constanza Piaggio based their portrait pair on a Piero della Francesca double portrait in particular (see illustration). They’ve updated the landscape backgrounds and made changes in design and scale. Yet, by keeping true to the stark look of the originals, they raise questions about perseverance and the preservation of the past. Why do we hold on to images and ideas from the past? Why do they still have a hold on us in the present? Walter P. Chrysler Jr. Art Purchase Fund 2007.2.2.1–.2
