Label TextJames Casebere American (b. 1953) A Barrel Vaulted Room, 1994 Platinum print, printed 1998 Gift of Joyce F. and Robert B. Menschel 2007.12.26 James Casebere’s photographs explore the lived history of architectural spaces, such as the bunker under the Reichstag (the German parliament building), the sewers and underground subway tunnels of Berlin, and West African slave headquarters. The emptiness of the vaulted room emits an ethereal, ghost-like presence of the former inhabitants and activities that took place amidst the walls. His images of architectural archetypes enact a rethinking about space through the lens of reconstructed memories and illusions. The artist constructs tabletop models that are based on his own thoughts and experiences of such sites. ProvenanceCollection of Robert B. and Joyce F.
