DescriptionThis color photograph is of a desert of reddish sand and blue sky with white clouds. A yellow, red, black and blue sign that says "Buy New, Pay Later" stands on its own in the middle of the picture.Label TextDavid Graham American, b. 1952 Route 64, West of Route 89, Arizona, 1986 Chromogenic print (photograph) A constant traveler, David Graham seeks out places where the American Dream has inscribed itself on the landscape. Here, a lonely sign reading “Buy Now, Pay Later” stands amid a vast stretch of desert, providing an ironic commentary on America’s frontier history, the drive for land ownership, and our environmental due. As Graham has stated, “it’s a versatile phrase,” as relevant during the Savings and Loan crisis of the 1980s when he made the picture as it is during the more recent Great Recession.
