DescriptionSigned.Label TextTaro Yamamoto American, 1919–1994 Untitled, 1958 Watercolor on rice paper Splashes and blocks of color, lines overlapping in a frenzied pace. Is this a landscape or shapes merging into one another? What the viewer is seeing is never clear in the work of Japanese American artist Taro Yamamoto, which was exactly his intent. His images reflect a desire for emotional self-expression through movement and color. Yamamoto became interested in large blocks of color from art friends and mentors Jackson Pollock and Hans Hoffmann, both of whom worked in highly abstract styles. Throughout Yamamoto’s practice, he experimented with numerous designs and mediums, changing from oils to acrylics to watercolors. He had no preferred style or approach; he wanted to explore the limits of all painting. Museum collection 0.5280
