DescriptionColumn with broad base and four cross-bar capitals known as the djed-pillar. It is reinforced by a back pillar pierced with a hole.

Label TextDjed-Column Amulets Third Intermediate Period, Dynasty 23, 818-715 B.C.E. Ceramic Gift of Mr. Eugene L. Garbaty 56.42.48-.49 Symbolic of Osiris, the djed-column amulet may have functioned as an emblem of the human spine. It was placed by priests on the throat of the mummy, where it served to protect the backbone of the deceased in the afterlife.
