DescriptionDark brown shiny glaze with decorations underglaze of magnolias and leaves. The leaves are green with the blossoms a light brown-probably due to the brown glaze over white. Baluster shaped vase.Label TextKataro Shirayamadani American, 1865–1948 Standard-Glaze Magnolia Vase, 1889 Glazed ceramic pottery by Rookwood Pottery Company, Cincinnati, Ohio To elevate the sophistication of the American ceramics industry, Rookwood Pottery Company hired Japanese designer Kataro Shirayamadani in 1887. In 1889 a display of Rookwood works by Shirayamadani and designer Albert Valentien received a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, France, signifying that the young American firm had become an international leader. The subtle form of the magnolia blossom on this vase is typical of the quiet elegance that Shirayamadani introduced to the company’s work. Chrysler Museum of Art, Gift of Walter P.
