DescriptionWatercolor drawing. Mounted on cardboard.Label TextCarlton Theodore Chapman American, 1860–1925 Clock Tower at Chartres Cathedral, 1889 Watercolor and gouache on paper Carlton Theodore Chapman surely captured this sketch on the spot at the grand, medieval cathedral at Chartres, France. The bricks of the clock tower seem to dissolve into the paper as they radiate outward from the clock face. While the brushstrokes of watercolor that form the walls and roof of the tower appear to have been quickly rendered, the artist focused more attention on the dazzling clock, using an opaque blue gouache and even mixing flecks of gold into the paint.
