DescriptionBronze female figure seated atop a square stand, also in bronze. The figure has her legs spread slightly apart with her head turned upwards in a partial profile.Label TextElizabeth Catlett American, 1915-2012 Seated Figure, 2003 Bronze on wood base Elizabeth Catlett’s Seated Figure represents the beauty of the female form. The figure sits powerfully on a backless stand with her head turned upwards in a profile position. She is not identifiable, but meant as an emblem about the strength and beauty of women across time and throughout the world. At the heart of Catlett’s practice was depicting women as complex. She presents them as being mothers, daughters, and sisters, as well as activists, community leaders, and regal figures, while also being sensual. When looking at other images of women in the galleries, can you see similarities between Catlett’s sculpture and others?
