Label TextThomas Moran American, 1837–1926 Venice, 1889 Oil on canvas With bright colors and energetic brushstrokes, Thomas Moran dissolves the clouds, architecture, and reflections of Venice into a tapestry of swirls and scribbles. Moran built his reputation by painting dramatic records of the mountains and waterfalls of the American West. He then traveled to Italy to renew his creative spirit. This painting is a hazy pastiche of Moran’s favorite memories of the unique island city, a destination equally inspiring for artists like the French Impressionists and for writers from Lord Byron to Henry James.
