DescriptionMeasuring 46 7/18 inches in height (119.65 cm), Klocker’s sculpture is elaborately and deeply carved from a single log of Tyrolean mountain pine. The carver has hollowed out the reverse to keep the wood from splitting. The bare wood of the reverse shows a limited number of old woodworm exit holes. There are no recent worm holes. There is a single drying crack on the upper left section of the sculpture which is less than one inch deep. There are some minor losses to the carved tips of the Madonna’s crown. Otherwise, the carving, paint, and gilding are in sound and remarkably original condition, with traces of delicate white sgraffito decoration still visible along the edges of the Madonna’s robe and bodice.
Label TextWorkshop of Hans Klocker Austrian, active 1478-1500 Madonna and Child, ca. 1485–95 Mountain pine with original gilding and polychrome This large, brightly painted sculpture of Mary and the infant Jesus is elaborately and deeply carved from a single log of Tyrolean mountain pine. The reverse has been hollowed out to keep the wood from splitting. The work was made for a church, where it may have been placed in front of a column or pillar, as the back was not meant to be seen.
