In these largescale black-and-white selfportraits, photographer Tseng Kwong Chi adopts the identity of a visiting Chinese dignitary who sports a “Mao suit” and deadpan expression. Under the guise of a foreign ambassador, Tseng poses prominently in front of popular picturesque views and tourist attractions. In doing so, Tseng becomes the star of a performance that explores various character types, including his own identity as a ChineseAmerican gay man and artist.
