DescriptionThis is a cast bronze statue roughly 11 3/4 x 18 5/8 x 5 3/4 inches in size. It is signed and dated on the top of the base “Copyright 1903 by Chas. Schreyvogel.” The foundry name is inscribed on the rear side panel of the base “ROMAN BRONZE WORKS N-Y-.” The cast is numbered “No 75.” on the underside of the base. The statue depicts a United States cavalry officer who is traveling through the desert of the American West, exploring and surveying new territory. Here he kneels and pours water from his canteen into his hat, in order to share the last drop with his horse.

This bronze shows a cavalry officer charting a path through the desert and pausing to share the dregs of his canteen with his horse. Lost-wax bronze casting captures the precise details of his equipment and invites viewers to treat the statue as a historical document.
