The Last Drop, 1903
Bronze cast by Roman Bronze Works,
White Plains, N.Y., cast no. 75
By 1900 new transportation and communication networks connected once-remote areas of the wester United States, changing the image of the frontier in American culture. This bronze shows a cavalry officer charting a path through the desert and pausing to share the dregs of his canteen with his horse. Lost-wax bronze casting captures the precise details of his equipment and invites viewers to treat the statue as a historical document.
