DescriptionThis is a book containing 100 photogravures depicting the canals and streets of Venice, Italy. It also contains pages of text describing the city.
Label TextFerdinando Ongania Italian, 1842–1911 Three plates from Calli e Canali in Venezia, Monumenti, 1892 Photogravures (etching made from photographic negative) These three photogravures come from a volume of 100 images of Venice and its architecture. By turning the volume’s pages, armchair tourists in the 1890s would have enjoyed a sense of meandering through the city’s famed buildings, streets, and canals. In addition to focusing on architecture, photographer Ferdinando Ongania included depictions of the Venetian people who lived and worked throughout the city. The human presence would have appealed to the book’s intended Victorian audience, who likely found assurances that the historic destination was sufficiently rustic, but comfortable.
