DescriptionA close-up portrait of Isaac Bashevis Singer at home. He is smiling and there is a striped chair behind his head.Label TextBruce Davidson American, born 1933 [Portraits—Isaac Singer], 1975 Gelatin silver print A portrait gives only one glimpse into the many facets of a person’s character. Here, Bruce Davidson offers three portraits of the writer Isaac Bashevis Singer, showing different poses and demeanors. In one, Singer sits in a wing-backed chair near his desk, presenting his credentials as a serious writer. Another is more casual with Singer reclining on a couch and reading from a notepad, though his expression is strained. That look of sternness is remedied by a close-up of Singer smiling broadly. Through the three portraits we can see the sitter’s range of emotions.
