Label TextJoe Maloney American, born 1949 top Delaware 1979, 1982 Dye-transfer print (color print made from photographic negative) bottom Pearl River, NY, 1978, 1982 Dye-transfer print (color print made from photographic negative) Classically cool Americana gives way to an array of vibrant colors in these photographic prints. Joe Maloney used the expensive and time-intensive dye-transfer process to create these prints in saturated color. During the 1970s, many American photographers experimented with the process because it allowed for precise control of individual cyan, magenta, and yellow dyes. The resulting prints were also colorfast, meaning they resisted the fading typical of other color photographs. Here Maloney exploits the process, using color as a dramatic element rather than merely reproducing realistic hues. Compare, for example, the saturated cyan in Delaware 1979 with the muted magenta of Pearl River, NY, 1978.
