Label TextLouise Fishman American, 1939-2021 Sven Jesper, 2015 Oil on linen Sven Jesper is a prime example of Louise Fishman’s signature style of highly gestural, gridded, abstract works. Filled with dark blues, grays, and whites, it shows the maker’s mark of large strokes made from a paint scraper. The artist works in Abstract Expressionism, a highly physical and dynamic style. This painting honors her late brother-in-law Sven Jesper Nyeboe (1943–1989), who died of complications from AIDS. Nyeboe was an art historian who fantasized about being a fashion designer, so he left academia behind and moved to New York to pursue his dream. Gift of Selina and Tom Stokes 2019.32ProvenanceThe artist; purchased by Tom and Selina Stokes, from Cheim & Reid, 2016; gifted to the Chrysler Museum of Art, 2019.
