Label TextWybrand de Geest Dutch, 1592–ca. 1661 Portrait of a Young Man in Red Riding Habit, 1631 Oil on wood panel Look at the brilliant red riding jacket, ornate gold embroidery, and elaborately decorated riding gloves and lace ruff worn by this young man. While his identity remains unknown, such finery only appears in Dutch royal portraits, so we know he was among the elites. The sword he carries was a privilege only nobility enjoyed. The artist who made this painting, Wybrand de Geest, was the court painter and leading portraitist in his native Leeuwarden, the capital of the Dutch province of Friesland and home of the Frisian Stadholder Ernst Casimir von Nassau Dietz and his court. Gift of Linda H. and George M. Kaufman
