DescriptionThis print of an attractive woman in a luxurious landscape features the elegant flowers and animals beloved by Art Nouveau artists. It betrays the influence of Japanese prints, which dazzled the art world after the country opened itself to foreign trade as the result of the Perry Expedition of 1853–54. The influence of ukiyo-e prints can be seen not only in the subject—a beautiful woman in nature—but also its rendering in flat shapes and through aquatint effects that imitate those achieved by graded color liquid ink of Japanese prints. The Chrysler Museum already owns an important settee and glass bowl by de Feure, so this poster will be a welcome addition to the collection and will be exhibited in The Triumph of Nature: Art Nouveau in the Chrysler Collection, organized by the Chrysler Museum of Art in partnership with International Art and Artists of Washington, D.C.Label TextGeorges de Feure French, 1868–1943 Retour, published in L’Estampe Moderne, June 1897, Nr. 2 Printed by Imprimerie Champenois, Paris Lithograph on Japanned paper 12 13/16 x 9 7/8 inches (32.5 x 25.1 cm), sheet: 15 15/16 x 12 inches (40.5 x 30.5 cm) Museum purchase ProvenanceThe print was purchased at Paul Prouté in Paris 2022Published Referencespublished in L’Estampe Moderne, June 1897, Nr. 2 Janine Bailly-Herzbert, Dictionnaire de l’Estampe en France, 1830–1950 (Paris: Flammarion, 1985), 119 and 354.
