Label TextDuring a career that ranged across the globe, Alberta Binford McCloskey mastered a style of still life painting which combined botanical realism with a sense of decorative flourish. Here she depicts the opium poppy, which was grown commercially in California until 1942, when Congress outlawed its cultivation. In this example, McCloskey appears concerned primarily with the vivid character of the delicate blossoms, shown in various phases, from peak opening to the shedding of petals.ProvenancePrivate collection, California Shannon's Fine Art Auctioneers, Milford, Connecticut, October 26th, 2006, lot 53 (consigned by the above) Private collection, New York (acquired from the above) Sotheby's, New York, May 24th, 2022, lot 1062 Avery Galleries to Brock to CMA March 2023 Exhibition History"A Shared Vision: The Macon and Joan Brock Collection of American Art," Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, VA, December 8, 2023 — March 10, 2024.
