DescriptionThis is a photomontage of 23 named “Briganti,” or brigands, of Sicily created circa 1877 by the photographer Enrico Seffer. The individual photographs were probably originally in the carte-de-visite format, common in the 1860s and 1870s.

The names of the criminals are included by each image: Luigi Tortomasi, Salvatore Salpietra, Gaudenzio Plaio, Giuseppe Lozito, Pasquale Messina, Antonio Giglio, Salvatore Alfano, Giuseppe Amorelli, Turrisi, Pagano La Marca, and Sebastiano Torrella.

One of the subjects (Giuseppe Nobile) was photographed postmortem, presumably after he was killed by members of law enforcement.
