DescriptionTender is the first monograph by artist Carla Williams, comprised of photographs created between 1984 and 1999 with the majority unpublished until now. The images portray a personal self-portrait of a young, queer, Black woman. Williams’s practice focuses on a re-imagining of Black womanhood through representations emancipated from the male gaze. The images in Tender were captured in instant Polaroid 35mm and 4x5 type 55 film formats. The book includes essays by the artist and scholar Mireille Miller-Young.Jan Philips van Thielen
