Label TextRalph Albert Blakelock developed a distinctive style of landscape painting that blended romanticism and realism. He studied at the National Academy of Design but spent much of his life in relative obscurity, facing financial hardship and mental illness. Although Blakelock struggled during his lifetime, his work gained tremendous value after he suffered a mental health crisis and was confined to a mental hospital in 1899. Despite his family’s poverty, Blakelock’s posthumous fame skyrocketed, culminating in record- breaking sales and his election to the National Academy.ProvenanceFrom the collection of Louis A.
